About The Accountant's Daughter

You know when you’re in over your head with your business and feel like you don’t know anything about anything?

And then you kind of shut down because you’re so overwhelmed with the number of things you *should* be doing that you don’t know where to begin?

Yeah. That was 2023 for me.

I was running The Accountant’s Daughter, doing bookkeeping for therapists and wellness practitioners. I loved the work (and still do!), but I won’t lie…

The pressures of operating a business solo were starting to build for me. I knew something needed to shift, but I didn’t know what or how.

So I tried somatic therapyand it changed everything.

I realized through my own therapy process that a lot of the challenges I was facing weren't because I wasn't good enough or smart enough. And that no amount of willpower or trying to channel “girl boss” energy was going to fix it.

My nervous system needed support.

Support that deep down I knew I needed but didn’t know how to ask for.

Somatic therapy changed my life.

So when I was invited to attend Mindful Somatic Wellness' Trauma Skills Training, I went for it. Because I knew that my relationship with money was complicated and layered with shame and trauma. And when I started paying attention, I noticed that that seemed true for a many of the people I interacted with in my business too.

I took the training, and then started a year long overhaul of my business, transforming it from regular ol’ bookkeeping to a trauma-informed bookkeeping practice that can actively adapt and flex to support the people it serves.

What is The Accountant’s Daughter?

First, let’s put a face to the name!

Sarah Collins, founder of The Accountant's Daughter

Hi, I’m Sarah, founder of The Accountant’s Daughter. I’m a nervous system-aware bookkeeper specializing in therapists and wellness practices.

I didn’t start off as a trauma-informed bookkeeper. But ever since the ah-ha moment when i realized money is actually very emotional, I’ve stood by this:

If you’re struggling with your relationship with money, it’s not a character flaw, it’s a resource issue. Financial literacy, time, accessible systems—and the emotional capacity to engage with money when scarcity or trauma has you in survival mode. Those are resources, not character traits.

Why am I so passionate about this?

Because I’ve watched so many business owners (myself included) absolutely freeze when they’re faced with their own finances

It’s not about being irresponsible or bad with money— it’s that the system we have to work with can be deeply destabilizing and doesn’t support how we live and work.

The shame. The rigidity. The "you should know this" energy. The assumption that if you're behind on your bookkeeping, you're somehow failing.

It's toxic, unsustainable, and completely unnecessary.

So the question became: What can I do to support my clients so that it’s easier for them to show up and engage with their finances? ‘

Safety’ is so subjective, I know I can’t possibly create that for everyone…  so how can I do better?

The simple but also complicated answer: Apply trauma-informed principles to bookkeeping.

SIDE QUEST: Building a supportive relationship with money as an entrepreneur

What I do as a nervous system-aware Bookkeeper

Financial Support That Actually Supports You

At its core, my DFY bookkeeping services are designed to:

  1. Take bookkeeping tasks off your to-do list

  2. Keep you CRA compliant and tax-season ready

  3. Keep you n-the-know about where you stand, financially speaking

Every. single. month.

But beyond the essential compliance piece, how we work together is curated around how you live and work.

Your nervous system gets a vote.

What that looks like in practice:

You choose how we communicate. In-person meetings if you’re in the Calgary area, video, phone, async, email, text, whatever works for you. And you can change your mind anytime, no explanation needed.

Financial information gets delivered in a way that makes you feel supported. Written summary, video walkthrough, or live consultation. Whatever gives you the best ability to process the information is how we’re going to do it.

Deadlines flex with your capacity, not arbitrary calendar dates. When you’re overwhelmed, we reschedule. No guilt, no drama.

If something feels uncomfortable or inaccessible, we figure it out together. Speaking your needs is never an imposition here. Creating accommodations is easy for me, and important for your comfort and success.

Monthly bookkeeping starts at $400/month.

Creating Accessibility Through Choice

Not everyone needs full-service monthly bookkeeping, and not everyone can access it the same way.

That's why I've built multiple pathways to working together. No matter your stage of business, I’m here to support you.

What The Accountant's Daughter Values

Choice and Agency

My goal is to NEVER assume I know what's best for someone else's business. Yes, I have “default” options, but those are starting points, not rules.

The options I offer might not work for you, and that's fine. If there's something else that feels better, let's do that. Weekly reminders instead of monthly? Done. Loom videos instead of live calls? Absolutely. Something I haven't even thought of yet? Tell me all about it

Everything I suggest is an invitation, not a directive. Your nervous system gets a vote, and you don't need to explain or justify what works for you.

The only non-negotiables? We need to stay CRA compliant, your books need to be accurate and up-to-date, and you need to be tax-ready. How we get there is flexible. That we get there isn't.

Authenticity

I design my systems to meet you where you're at, which ideally allows you to show up authentically with me.

If something's going on and you're struggling, you can tell me. In as much or as little detail feels comfortable to you. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable being real about where you're at and what you need.

I show up the same way. If I'm tired, I'll say I'm tired. If my week was busy, I'll tell you it was busy. I'm not going to pretend everything's perfect all the time, because that's not how life works.

When we can both be authentic about our capacity and our reality, it creates space to build something that really works.

Accessibility

Around here, accessibility is a necessity to inclusivity, not a kindness.

Money is more emotional than mathematical. When we're coming at finances from a place of shame, anxiety, trauma, or scarcity, it's really hard to actually access financial literacy. You can learn all the concepts in the world, but if your nervous system is activated, there's no capacity to absorb that information and do something useful with it.

That’s why I have multiple access points including flexible payment plans, the Community Exchange Program, and DIY software set up and training.

I'm not going to judge your financial reality. A lot of people tell me "it feels like I'm taking my clothes off in front of you" when they first share their books with me. But I'm really not worried about it.

We all do the best with what we have, with the capacity we have, with the access we have. That varies for everyone.

I’m just trying to make the playing field feel more level.

Ways to work with me

Monthly Bookkeeping

For when you want someone to handle it all while keeping you in the loop.

Monthly bookkeeping isn't just about getting your books done, it's about building a relationship with someone who wants to understand how your nervous system shows up around money.

When you work with me, you're getting someone who notices when you go quiet and checks in without judgment. Someone who remembers you mentioned your kid's surgery next month and adjusts deadlines accordingly. Someone who celebrates with you when you hit revenue goals and helps you troubleshoot when things feel tight.

We build rapport over time. I learn how your business flows, what your capacity looks like in different seasons, and how you prefer to receive information. You learn that I'm not going to shame you for the messy moments, that I really mean it when I say "no judgment," and that your financial reality is safe with me.

The longer we work together, the more I can anticipate what you need. I know when to push gently and when to give space.

This isn't transactional bookkeeping. It's relational.

DIY Setup & Training

For when you want to take control of your books, but you need a solid foundation.

If you’re not in a space to fully hand off your bookkeeping yet, and you’re not really sure where to start, start here. I’ll build a system for you, do the behind the scenes work of figuring out your workflows, and train you on the whole process. Then you’ll get two weeks of follow up support while you practice.

You’ll get a system designed for you, plus the confidence to maintain it.

Catch Up Bookkeeping

For when your books need some love, and you need to not feel bad about it.

Behind on your books? No judgment. I’ll get you current so you can start making informed decisions about your business again and finally get that heaviness off your chest.

Know where you actually stand, financially speaking.

The Community Exchange Program

For when you’re ready for monthly bookkeeping, but the catch up investment is a barrier.

Inspired by mutual aid principles, The Community Exchange Program removes catch up cost barriers through direct service exchange (you provide services directly to me) or community-centered exchange (you provide pro-bono or sliding scale services to your community).

This program is designed with the entrepreneur who is so ready for monthly bookkeeping, but just can’t swing the catch up cost. After the catch up, you commit to 12 months of monthly bookkeeping at my regular rates. This keeps the program sustainable for me, and gives us an opportunity to build a relationship that supports you and your business long term.

FAQs

What does trauma-informed bookkeeping actually mean?

It means applying principles from somatic practices and trauma-informed care including building ‘safety’, choice, collaboration, and empowerment to how I do bookkeeping. You get to choose how we work together. There’s no shame, no rigidity, no “you should know this” energy.

How did you become trauma-informed?

I’m certified through Mindful Somatic Wellness’ Trauma Skills Training

Who are The Accountant’s Daughter’s services for?

I specialize in working with therapists and wellness practitioners, but these services are for any service provider who would enjoy a trauma-informed approach to their finances. Especially those neurodiverse individuals or those with anxiety or sensitiveies who hold the belief that they are ‘bad with money’.

What is The Community Exchange Program?

The Community Exchange Program is designed to limit upfront cost barriers through direct service exchange or community-centered exchange (you provide services to your community). It requires a 12 month commitment to monthly bookkeeping after catch up, and is application based. It is inspired by mutual aid principles, and rooted in reciprocity and relationship building. The goal of the program is to prove that accessibility and business success can work together.

Your relationship with your bookkeeping doesn’t have to be hard. Let’s build something together that works for you.
