Okay, but is your business insured?

I know, I know. Not the most exciting topic. But business insurance is more than just peace of mind. It's actually about protecting your profits.

Think about it this way: you're building a profitable business, setting aside money for taxes, maybe even starting to save for bigger goals. One lawsuit, one accident, one unexpected claim could wipe all of that out if you're not protected.

It's Not That Expensive

Business insurance is one of those things that feels like it's going to cost a fortune, but it's usually much more affordable than you think. For most service-based businesses, basic liability coverage costs less than you probably spend on software subscriptions each month.

The cost of not having insurance? That could actually be devastating to your business finances.

Your Business Has Probably Changed

If you got insurance when you first started your business, when's the last time you reviewed your coverage? As your business evolves, your insurance needs might change too. Maybe you're working with higher-value clients now. Maybe you've added new services. Maybe you're working from a different location or have new equipment. It's worth checking that your coverage still makes sense for where your business is today.

What This Has to Do with Bookkeeping

From a bookkeeping perspective, insurance premiums are a legitimate business expense AND they're protecting your bottom line. When I'm looking at a client's finances, proper insurance coverage is part of having a healthy, sustainable business structure.

When unexpected issues arise and there's no insurance coverage, it's not just the immediate cost that stings. It's the stress, time away from revenue-generating work, and sometimes the long-term financial impact that really hurts.

I'm not telling you to go buy the most expensive policy you can find. Just look into it. If you don't have business insurance, look into what basic coverage would cost for your situation. If you do have insurance, review it to make sure it still fits your needs.

Think of it as another way to take care of your business finances. You track your expenses, you set aside money for taxes, you maybe even have an emergency fund. Business insurance is just another piece of building a financially stable business.

Your business is worth protecting. The small monthly cost of insurance is nothing compared to what you could lose without it.
